The evaluations of the Urheberrechts-Wissensgesellschafts-Gesetz („Copyright Knowledge Society Act“) of 2022 paint a positive picture of its impact on digital science and education. The two reports by the BMJ and iRights.Law/BMBF take up the assessments of rights holders and users in a broad and empirically sound manner. They also address the controversial points of the legislative history. The article presents the results of the two reports and goes into detail about the continuing controversies surrounding Sections 60a et seq. UrhG (German Copyright Act): in particular, under Section 60a UrhG, it should also be possible to use general-interest magazines in their entirety for teaching and learning purposes; a lump-sum payment for use of the copyright under Section 60h UrhG should always be linked to representative samples; the TDM limitations of Sections 44b, 60d UrhG should be understood as a legal policy instrument for limiting or enabling artificial intelligence.
