Despite the deteriorating relations between Russia and the West during the past years, the author supports a European perspective of Russia. The country is an essential part of European politics, economy and culture. But being an integral part of the European peace order, Russia has to comply with European standards and norms. It cannot pursue an imperialist policy like in the 19th and 20th century. As long as Russia follows such a policy, Europe has to respond with realpolitik, without acting like a hegemonic power itself. Against this backdrop, the author reviews the relations between Russia and the West since 1991, presents Germany’s perspective on the issue, and proposes concrete measures to improve the relations. orphans 8
