Der Beitrag zeigt, dass nicht jede rhetorische Bezugnahme auf die Vergangenheit automatisch auch zu nostalgischen Gefühlen unter den ZuhörerInnen führt. Eine nähere Analyse der Rahmenbedingungen, unter denen Nostalgie entsteht, sowie ihrer Funktionen für Individuen, erlaubt ein besseres Verständnis nostalgischer Gefühle und ihre Unterscheidung von anderen Gefühlen und Verhaltensweisen, die in aktuellen Debatten unter der Kategorie ›Nostalgie‹ subsummiert werden. Ansatzpunkte für weiterführende empirische Analysen aus dem Bereich der ›Soziologie der Emotionen‹ werden unter Bezugnahme auf (sozial-)psychologische Befunde und Arbeiten aus dem Bereich der Memory Studies aufgezeigt. Emotionsmanagement und Scham-Wut-Spiralen erweisen sich dabei als zwei Beispiele emotionssoziologischer Konzepte, die für die Analyse der sozialen Einbettung von Nostalgiegefühlen fruchtbar gemacht werden können.
