How is it that ecofeminism, a school of thought that has long been regarded as the epitome of a problematic essentialism, is currently enjoying renewed popularity? This article addresses this question by comparing the theoretical positions of Maria Mies and Donna Haraway. We conclude that Mies’s ecofeminist approach and similar approaches may open up materialist ways of thinking beyond the anti-essentialist theoretical project (built around the dissolution of fixations and categorizations) – ways of thinking that become relevant in the context of climate change as an existential social problem.
