After the demise of the Soviet Union, the West considered Russia to be a partner that shares common goals and values. Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its destabilization of Eastern Ukraine took many by surprise. It showed that Russia’s and the West’s geopolitical interests differ. This article aims to comprehend Russian geopolitical ambitions and the way it might use military power to pursue them. For this, Russian military literature and official documents were analysed to delineate Russia’s strategic assessment and its current views on warfare. The West and its values are considered to be Russia’s main adversaries. The way that Russia is addressing the Western threat is through New Generation Warfare.
