Macht ist ein aktiver Vorgang und entsteht in sozialen Prozessen, in denen einzelne Personen, Gruppen oder Institutionen aktiv dominante Herrschaftsformen gegenüber anderen anstreben. Als relationales Konstrukt ist Macht eine Ausdrucksform von Interaktionen in sozialen Beziehungen. Machtfigurationen sind hochkomplexe, ineinander verschachtelte Handlungsformen. Macht kann in, durch und von Medien und Journalismus ausgeübt werden. Macht ist nicht gegenständlich, sie ist eine „weithin unsichtbare Eigenschaft sozialer Beziehungen“ (Imbusch 2007, S. 396).
