Europe, a fallen star, is seeking regeneration. The European Union, after more than 10 years of setbacks, tries to claim the aura of a community of European values. But with the thesis of an identity between the EU and Europe the unionist elites aggravate the precarious state of Europe. The construction of an atmosphere of collective “mauvaise foi” serving material interests could dispossess Europeans of their origin. A critical limitation of what is the domain of EU and what concerns Europe is needed. This paper argues that the European feeling of belonging together relies on pre-reflexive atmospheric experiences, inaccessible to discursive representation. Instead of formulating a European ideology, Europeans should gain the opportunity to get in touch with implanting European situations (following Hermann Schmitz), e.g. the acquisition of an “adoptive language” (Jürgen Trabant), becoming an affective anchor.
Europa ist geschwächt und müht sich um Regeneration. Die Europäische Union, auf der Suche nach einem neuen Schwung, versucht, sich mit der Aura einer europäischen Wertegemeinschaft zu umgeben. Aber mit der These der Identität von EU und Europa belasten die Unionseliten den ohnehin prekären Zustand Europas. Die Konstruktion einer Atmosphäre des kollektiven Selbstbetrugs („mauvaise foi“), welche materiellen Interessen dient, könnte die Europäer um die Quelle ihrer Herkunft bringen. Deshalb ist eine kritische Abgrenzung dessen, was die EU betrifft, von dem, was Europa betrifft, notwendig. Der vorliegende Text versucht zu begründen, warum ein europäisches Zusammengehörigkeitsgefühl auf präreflexiven kollektiven Atmosphären beruht, die nicht diskursiv dargestellt werden können. Statt eine europäische Ideologie zu propagieren, sollten den Europäern Erfahrungen mit implantierenden europäischen Situationen (nach Hermann Schmitz) ermöglicht werden, etwa durch den Erwerb einer affektiv bedeutsamen „Adoptivsprache“ (Jürgen Trabant).
