A growing number of international experts warn that lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS) could have dangerous implications in the future regarding ethics, international humanitarian law, and security. That is why the international community is vividly discussing how to proceed with regulations and arms control. This article focuses on the diplomatic and legal debate on the regulation of LAWS within the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), evaluating the developments of the past years. It outlines the challenges of capturing and controlling LAWS, in particular the lack of a common definition, the limited understanding of underlying technologies, and an insufficient awareness of security implications.
