number of political and (para)military actors involved and their
diverging interests and objectives. This article looks at the war in
Syria and the conflict’s domestic, regional and global dimension.
Seven different manifestations or forms of warfare illustrate the
incomparable combination of conflicts, which can best be understood as
the simultaneous outbreak of various wars. In conclusion, five major
challenges for Syria are formulated. Despite the territorial losses of
the opposition as well as the terror group Islamic State, the root
causes of the conflict remain unchanged.},
