Zusammenfassung

Bereits im Klassizismus avancierte die antike Glanztonkeramik zu einer bevorzugten Inspirationsquelle, aber auch im Historismus beeinflussten die griechischen Vasen den europäischen Geschmack maßgeblich: Neben Formen und Dekoren versuchte man nun auch die einzigartige Technik des Glanztons für sich fruchtbar zu machen. Dieses wenig bekannte Kapitel der europäischen Keramikgeschichte wird im vorliegenden Tagungsband erstmals breit erschlossen. Die Beiträge thematisieren verschiedene Firmen und Akteure aus Deutschland, England, Frankreich und Italien, so dass ein facettenreiches Bild der Rezeption griechischer Vasen entsteht, die auch im ‚langen‘ 19. Jahrhundert nicht nur das neue Kunstgewerbe, sondern Kunstschaffende aller Sparten prägten. Abstract

From its discovery in the mid-18th century onwards, the black-glazed pottery of ancient Greece set several trends in the history of taste in Europe. This was also especially true in the Victorian era, which took a systematic interest in copying not only shapes and décors of the pots but also the ancient technique itself. This conference volume aims at enlightening our study of this new phase, which has received little attention so far. In ten chapters, it provides deep insights into the various approaches of several factories and players in England, France, Germany and Italy, painting a lively picture of the reception of the Greek vase in 19th-century crafts and the arts.
