Steuern sind ein grundlegendes Element moderner Industriegesellschaften und betreffen jeden einzelnen Bürger. Die heutigen Steuersysteme sind historisch gewachsen und spiegeln die politischen Traditionen eines Landes wider, sind zugleich aber von politischen, intellektuellen und ökonomischen Trends jenseits nationalstaatlicher Grenzen beeinflusst. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes gehen auf eine Konferenz des DHI Washington zurück. Führende Experten von beiden Seiten des Atlantik analysieren die Entwicklung des modernen Steuerstaates und untersuchen erstmals in vergleichender interdisziplinärer Perspektive die komplexen Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Steuern, politischen Mitwirkungsrechten und Nationsbildungsprozessen in Deutschland und den USA vom 18. bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert. Methodologisch bietet der Band den Einstieg in eine transnationale Geschichte des modernen Steuerwesens. Der Band richtet sich an Historiker, Rechtshistoriker, Politologen und Ökonomen, die sich mit Fragen der Staats- und Nationsbildung, der Entwicklung der Zivilgesellschaft und des Verhältnisses zwischen Staat und Individuum sowie der historischen Dimension des Steuerwesens beschäftigen.
