In dem 1778 verfassten Mein Daniel Wyttenbachs Memoria oder Lebens-Umstände berichtet der Autor von seiner langjährigen Arbeit am Tentamen, dessen drei Bände zwischen 1741 und 1747 in Bern erschienen waren. Er stellt es als Ergebnis seines langjährigen Studiums der Theodizee Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz' und der Philosophie Christian Wolffs dar. Dieses „System“, wie er es meistens nennt, ist ein Hauptwerk der „vernünftigen Orthodoxie“ des theologischen Wolffianismus in seiner reformierten (auch „calvinistischen“) Variante; sie steht der lutherischen Variante von Israel Gottlieb Canz und Jakob Carpov nahe, die er auch durchgehend zitiert. Wyttenbachs „Schwanengesang“, wie ihn ein Berner Freund nannte, der den Text durchsah und bei der Suche nach einem Verleger half, der nicht nur reizende Poesien und lustige Romane, sondern auch „das Ernsthafte“ publiziere, gibt einen tiefen Einblick in die mentale Verfassung eines theologischen Wolffianers, dem die philosophische und theologische Entwicklung seit den 1760er Jahren in der Theologie und im kritisch lesenden Publikum die methodische und scheinbare dogmatische Stabilität seiner „vernünftigen Orthodoxie“ zersetzte und der sich historiographisch und ökumenisch neu orientiert.
Abstract
In Mein Daniel Wyttenbachs Memoria oder Lebens-Umstände, written in 1778, the author recounts his many years of work on the Tentamen, whose three volumes were published in Bern between 1741 and 1747. He presents his work as the result of his many years of studying Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's theodicy and Christian Wolff's philosophy. This "system", as he calls it, is a key work of the "reasonable orthodoxy" of theological Wolffianism in its Reformed (also "Calvinist") version which is closely related to the Lutheran variant by Israel Gottlieb Canz and Jakob Carpov, which he quotes throughout his work. Wyttenbach's "swan singing", as it was called by a friend from Bern who reviewed the text and helped him find a publisher, provides insights into the mental state of a theological Wolffian, for whom the philosophical and theological development in theology and among the critically reading public since the 1760s shattered the methodological and apparent dogmatic stability of his "reasonable orthodoxy" and who reoriented himself historiographically and ecumenically.
