In the practical research project TransZ, we accompanied working groups of local people between 2017 and 2022 in generating and implementing ideas for the development of the old town centre. The initial idea of the project was to enable new ideas and to win over new activists for urban development through an open approach. The description of the course of the project in two very different working groups is followed by an analysis of the motiva- tions of the participants and the cooperation in the two working groups as well as our role and the cooperation with the local government. Recommendations for the integration of volunteering in urban development are derived from these findings.
