Solidarität wird oft an die soziale Gemeinschaft gebunden. Ein solches Verständnis greift in einer globalisierten Welt offensichtlich zu kurz. Demgegenüber argumentiert der Beitrag für ein politisches Verständnis von globaler Solidarität. Ein solches Konzept zielt, im Kontrast zu einem Fokus auf soziale Solidarität, auf gesellschaftlichen Wandel und beinhaltet ein utopisches Moment. Dabei geht es den vielfältigen und teilweise auch konfligierenden Praktiken politischer Solidarität im globalen Kontext vor allem um eine Kritik an und eine Alternative zu traditionellen politischen Strategien und deren Umgang mit globalen Herausforderungen. Im Kampf um globale Lösungsvorschläge zielen sie auf eine Hör- und Sichtbarmachung der Ausgeschlossenen angesichts vielfältiger Krisen. Dabei erweist sich gerade die Pluralität dieser Praktiken als ein wichtiges demokratisches Potenzial.
