Die Tatsache interkultureller Kommunikation ist wohl so alt wie die Geschichte der Menschheit: seit Beginn menschlicher Kulturen haben deren Mitglieder miteinander ,kommuniziert', sie haben sich gegenseitig informiert, beeinflußt und dominiert. Nur in neuerer Zeit wurde die interkulturelle Kommunikation zu einem besonderen Bereich der Kommunikationswissenschaft. Erfahrungen der Dynamik kultureller Minderheiten in bestehenden Kulturen, wie etwa in den USA, Migration und das Zusammenwachsen der Welt durch moderne Massenmedien und neue K.ommunikationstechnologien haben den Blick für die Notwendigkeit einer ausführlicheren Auseinandersetzung mit den Bedingungen, Formen und Elementen interkultureller Kommunikation geschärft.
